The graveyard at Whitechurch tells a quietly legible story of shrinkage. What visitors see today, a sub-rectangular enclosure measuring roughly 60 metres east to west and 50 metres north to south, enclosed by a mortared stone wall standing between 1.4 and 1.6 metres high, is not the full extent of what was once here. The first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map, published in 1838, shows the graveyard continuing a further estimated 25 metres to the east, a section that has since been lost or absorbed into the surrounding landscape. That kind of gradual retreat is easy to miss unless you know to look for the discrepancy between old cartography and the ground underfoot.

The site sits within what may be an early ecclesiastical enclosure, a type of boundary, often roughly circular or oval, that in Ireland frequently marks the footprint of an early medieval monastic or church settlement. Within the present walls there are the remains of a church and a baptismal font, and immediately outside to the north-west, a holy well once stood, adding to the impression of a layered sacred landscape that accumulated over many centuries. Holy wells in Ireland were often associated with pre-Christian veneration before being absorbed into Christian practice, and their proximity to church sites is common enough to be almost a pattern. The earliest legible grave marker here is dated 1790, though the presence of the font and the probable enclosure suggest the site's origins run considerably deeper than the eighteenth century. Burials are concentrated towards the southern part of the enclosure, and the entrance is through a gate on the southern side.
