Fulacht fia, Kildare, Co. Kildare

A small pit, less than two metres long and barely half a metre deep, might not seem like much, but what was found at Grey Abbey in Kildare tells a quiet story about prehistoric life that stretches back thousands of years. The feature in question is a fulacht fia, a type of ancient cooking or heating site found widely across Ireland and Britain. The basic principle involves heating stones in a fire, dropping them into a water-filled trough to bring it to the boil, and using that heat to cook meat or process materials. Over time, the cracked and shattered stones accumulate around the pit in a distinctive mound, often horseshoe-shaped.

This particular example came to light in 2005 during archaeological work carried out in advance of a large commercial development. The excavation, conducted under licence number 04E0233, uncovered the pit in an area known as Field 2 at the Grey Abbey site. It measured 1.8 metres north to south, 1.25 metres wide, and 0.48 metres deep, and had been filled with three separate deposits of burnt sandstone set within a charcoal matrix. That layering suggests repeated use or at least a deliberate sequence of activity, rather than a single episode. The findings were published by E. Dennehy in 2008. The fact that the feature survived at all is partly a matter of luck; commercial development of this kind, without prior investigation, would ordinarily have removed all trace of it.
