Enclosure, Kilkea, Co. Kildare

In a field near Kilkea in County Kildare, the outline of an ancient enclosure survives not as a visible earthwork but as a whisper in the soil, readable only from the air. What appears in aerial photography as a cropmark, the differential growth of crops above buried features that betray subsurface ditches and banks to a camera overhead, reveals a broad fosse, essentially a wide defensive ditch, curving across the ground in a way that suggests something deliberate and considered was once bounded here.

What makes this particular site quietly complex is the layering. The aerial photograph, catalogued as GB95.FS.29, shows the fosse appearing to overlie an earlier enclosure to its north, meaning at least two distinct phases of occupation or enclosure are present on the same ground. The oval form visible in the aerial record corresponds closely to an enclosure already documented on the first edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map, surveyed in 1837, which places the site within a long tradition of Irish field archaeology in which nineteenth-century cartographers unknowingly preserved the outlines of much older structures. The relationship between these two superimposed features, one earlier and one later, has not been fully resolved, and the site carries that particular quality of many Irish enclosures, where the questions outnumber the answers.
