Barrow (Ditch barrow), Inchaquire, Co. Kildare

In a field at Inchaquire in County Kildare, there is a prehistoric burial monument that nobody has ever excavated, walked around, or likely even noticed from the road. It exists, at present, only as a ghostly ring visible from the sky, a cropmark roughly fifteen metres in diameter that shows up in aerial photography. Cropmarks form when buried features, such as the filled-in ditch that once encircled a barrow mound, affect the growth of crops or grass above them. Soil that once filled a ditch tends to retain more moisture, producing a slightly lusher or differently coloured band of vegetation, one that becomes legible only when viewed from altitude, particularly during dry summers when the contrast is sharpest.

The ring at Inchaquire is consistent with a ditch barrow, a burial monument type in which the dead were interred beneath a low mound and surrounded by a circular ditch, sometimes with an outer bank. These monuments are associated broadly with prehistoric funerary practice and are found across Ireland, often in lowland agricultural areas where centuries of ploughing have reduced or entirely erased any surface trace of the original mound. The Inchaquire example was identified from a Google Earth aerial photograph taken on 28 June 2018, a summer date when dry conditions would have encouraged exactly the kind of differential growth that makes such features visible. A second possible ditch barrow lies approximately 120 metres to the west-northwest, suggesting that this part of Kildare may once have formed part of a small prehistoric funerary landscape, though without ground investigation neither monument can be confirmed or dated with any precision.
