Barrows
In the townland of Ardvarney in County Mayo, a barrow sits quietly in the landscape, largely unknown and as yet undigitised in the public record.
A barrow is a burial mound, typically raised during the Bronze Age or earlier, and used to mark the interment of the dead beneath a cairn of stone or a mound of earth. They appear across Ireland in great numbers, some excavated and well-documented, others still holding whatever was placed inside them thousands of years ago. The one at Ardvarney falls into a category that is frustratingly common: officially recorded, formally classified, but with almost no detail currently available to the general public.
