Ringfort (Cashel), Corvoderry, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Corvoderry in County Mayo, there sits a cashel, a type of ringfort built from dry-stone walling rather than earthen banks.

Where the more common earthen ringfort relied on raised raths and ditches to define a farmstead's boundary, the cashel used whatever stone lay closest to hand, and in the west of Ireland that was often a great deal. These circular enclosures were the basic unit of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically housing a single farming family and their livestock, and they appear across the landscape in their thousands. What makes any individual example worth pausing over is the sheer persistence of the form, structures built perhaps twelve hundred years ago that still hold their rough outline against the bog and the weather.

Corvoderry is a quiet townland, and the cashel it contains has not yet attracted the kind of detailed published record that would give it a named owner, a construction date, or a documented history of reuse. What can be said is that cashels of this type belong broadly to the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries, and that Mayo's landscape is particularly dense with them, a reflection of how thoroughly that stony ground was once worked and inhabited. The name cashel itself derives from the Irish caiseal, related to the Latin castellum, suggesting the enclosure was understood even then as something fortified, a boundary between the domestic world and whatever lay outside it.
