But the roughly circular earthen platform at Farrannasculloge carries the quiet possibility of being a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, which was the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically dating from around the fifth to the twelfth century. What makes this particular example quietly interesting is its ambiguity: the site sits at the lower end of the size range expected for a rath, leaving open the question of whether it is genuinely one, or simply a natural feature of the landscape that has been shaped, over centuries, to resemble one.

The platform measures roughly 13.6 metres across its longest axis and 10.5 metres across its shorter one, defined by a scarp, essentially the sloped edge of the raised earthen bank that would have enclosed the original farmstead. The scarp is most pronounced at the north-east, where it rises to about 1.6 metres, and is noticeably lower and more slumped along the southern edge, suggesting centuries of erosion or agricultural disturbance. At the south and south-west, there is a slight terrace at the base of the platform, a narrow ledge roughly 1.4 metres wide that gives way on the north-west side to a more broadly slumped slope. The top of the platform is largely level, though the south-west portion sits fractionally higher than the eastern side. A single hawthorn bush grows on the eastern edge, the kind of tree long associated in Irish folk tradition with fairy forts, the popular name often given to ringforts, which were frequently left undisturbed by farmers wary of the consequences of clearing them.
