Tobercummeen, Knockfree, Co. Mayo

Outside Knockfree in County Mayo, a holy well has been blocked up and is no longer visited.

That closure is itself a small historical fact worth pausing on, because wells of this kind were once focal points of local religious life, places where people gathered to perform stations, a form of devotional circuit involving prescribed prayers and sometimes a sequence of physical movements around the site. Alongside the well stood a sycamore tree that served as a rag tree, meaning that visitors would tie strips of cloth to its branches, a practice understood to transfer illness or petition to the sacred place. When the tree went and the well was stopped, that entire ritual geography quietly ceased.

The well appears under the name Tobercummeen on Ordnance Survey six-inch maps from both 1838 and 1930, suggesting it was recognised as a named, established site across at least a century of mapping. The name itself follows the common Irish pattern of tobar, meaning well, combined with a qualifying element, and its appearance on two separate map editions indicates it was not a minor or informal feature but something the local community considered significant enough to record consistently. Beyond what the maps and local memory preserve, the specific history of how or when the well fell out of use has not been documented.
