Settlement Sites
Beneath the townland of Treanrevagh in County Mayo, an underground stone-lined passage sits quietly in the landscape, largely unexamined and little discussed.
It is a souterrain, a type of artificial underground chamber or tunnel built during the early medieval period in Ireland, typically constructed from dry-laid stone and used variously for storage, refuge, or as an annex to a nearby settlement. They are found in considerable numbers across the country, yet individual examples outside the better-known sites rarely attract attention, and Treanrevagh's is among those that have slipped through the gaps of public record.
