Burial Grounds
On the Atlantic edge of Achill Island, near the village of Keel, there is a patch of ground that occupies a particular and sombre category in Irish archaeology: the children's burial ground, known in Irish tradition as a cillín.
These were the places where unbaptised infants, and sometimes others considered to exist outside the formal rites of the Catholic Church, were laid to rest outside consecrated ground. The practice was widespread across Ireland for centuries, shaped by the theological doctrine that held unbaptised souls could not enter heaven. Families buried their children quietly, often at night, in marginal spaces: old ringforts, the edges of fields, early medieval ecclesiastical sites, and coastal ground.
