Griffin’s Island, Lough Cullin, Co. Mayo

Lough Cullin in County Mayo is one of those quietly consequential lakes that most people pass without stopping, connected by a narrow channel to the better-known Lough Conn to its north.

Sitting within it is a small island that carries the name Griffin's Island, a name that suggests a family, a claim, perhaps a dispute, though the water keeps its own counsel on the details.

Lough Cullin itself lies in the Crossmolina area of north Mayo, a landscape shaped by glacial drift and the slow work of the Deel and Manulla rivers feeding into the connected lough system. Islands on Irish lakes frequently carry long histories, sometimes as crannogs, which are artificial or artificially modified islands built from timber, peat, and stone, used as defended dwelling places from the Bronze Age through to the early modern period. Whether Griffin's Island has such origins, or whether its name reflects a more recent landholding family, remains a question the available record cannot yet answer with any precision. The Griffin surname itself has deep roots in Connacht, appearing in medieval annals and later in the complex land tenure arrangements that characterised post-Plantation Mayo.

What can be said is that the island is formally recognised as a site of archaeological interest, which places it in the company of the many lough islands across Mayo that reward closer attention precisely because so little has been written about them.
