Ringfort (Cashel), Cashel, Co. Mayo

A cashel is a ringfort built from stone rather than earth, the word itself deriving from the Latin castellum by way of Old Irish, and the townland of Cashel in County Mayo takes its name from precisely such a structure.

That a place should be named after its fortification, and that the fortification should then survive, at least in part, into the present is the kind of quiet continuity that the Irish landscape manages with some regularity. Ringforts of this type were typically constructed during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and served as enclosed farmsteads for a single family and their livestock, the stone wall providing both a boundary and a degree of protection.

The Mayo townland sits in a county that contains a considerable concentration of cashels and earthen raths, many of them on elevated ground with wide views across bog and mountain. The choice of stone over earth in western counties like Mayo often reflects simple practicality: good building stone was more readily available than the deep, workable soil required for a substantial earthen bank. Beyond that general context, specific details about the history of this particular structure, its dimensions, its condition, or any excavation it may have undergone, remain undocumented in available public sources at present.
