Ringfort (Rath), Killeen, Co. Mayo

A farm track runs straight through the middle of this early medieval ringfort in Killeen, Co. Mayo, bisecting an enclosure that was already ancient when someone decided it made a perfectly convenient route between fields.

That kind of casual repurposing is not unusual in the Irish countryside, where ringforts, also known as raths, circular earthwork enclosures typically dating from the early medieval period and used as defended farmsteads, number in the tens of thousands and have been put to every imaginable secondary use. What makes the Killeen example quietly interesting is how legibly that history of interference survives in the landscape.

The rath sits on a low rise in pasture, its oval interior measuring roughly 32.6 metres north to south and 23 metres east to west. The enclosing elements vary considerably around the circuit: a stony scarp rising to about 1.4 metres at the north-west, a broad stony bank to the north-north-east and east-south-east that may represent a collapsed wall, and a drystone field wall to the south-east that follows the original curve of the monument closely enough to suggest the farmer who built it understood, or at least respected, what was already there. At the south and south-west, the enclosing element has been levelled entirely. The modifications date broadly to the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. A north-south road or farm track, three metres wide and flanked by drystone walls, was cut straight through the interior, and a second trackway branched off it on an east-west axis; both appear on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1837, meaning the alteration was well established by the time systematic mapping of Ireland began. Only a remnant field wall now marks where that second track ran. At the north-west of the interior there is also a shallow, grassed-over depression from which stones protrude; its origins are uncertain, though it appears to reflect more recent disturbance rather than any feature of the original enclosure.
