Ringfort (Rath), Inishlim Island, Co. Mayo

On a small island off the coast of County Mayo, a ringfort sits in a state of quiet obscurity.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, are among the most common archaeological monument types in Ireland, circular enclosures defined by earthen banks or stone walls that served as farmsteads and defended homesteads during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. That one survives on Inishlim Island is, in itself, a small puzzle worth pausing over. Island-based ringforts are comparatively rare, and their presence raises immediate questions about who chose to build there, how permanently they settled, and what relationship they maintained with the mainland.
