Enclosure, Drumdoogh, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Drumdoogh in County Mayo, an ancient enclosure sits in the landscape, its origins and purpose still waiting to be properly documented.

Enclosures of this kind are among the most common yet least understood monument types in Ireland, appearing as circular or oval earthworks, defined by banks, ditches, or stone walls, and dating anywhere from the Bronze Age through to the early medieval period. They could have served as farmsteads, ceremonial spaces, or enclosures for livestock, and without excavation or detailed survey it is rarely possible to say which.
