Enclosures
In the townland of Gneeve in County Mayo, an ancient enclosure sits in the landscape, recognised as an archaeological monument but largely undescribed in any publicly available record.
Enclosures of this kind, broadly defined as areas bounded by earthen banks, ditches, or stone walls, appear across Ireland in enormous variety, from prehistoric farmsteads to early medieval ecclesiastical enclosures, and their age and function often remain uncertain without excavation or detailed survey work. What draws attention here is not what is known about this particular site, but rather how little has yet been made available. It occupies a category of place that is formally counted and mapped, yet remains, for the time being, a name without a story attached.
