Ringfort (Rath), Carrowndangan, Co. Mayo

Beneath the level interior of this Co. Mayo ringfort, if local tradition is to be believed, there is a souterrain, an underground passage or chamber of the kind that early medieval farming communities used for storage or, occasionally, refuge.

The rath itself sits on a natural rise in average pasture at Carrowndangan, its circular earthen platform measuring roughly 35 metres across, bounded by a substantial scarp that stands over two metres high on the western side. That combination, an elevated position, a well-preserved bank, and a probable underground chamber, makes this an unusually complete example of a monument type that once numbered in the tens of thousands across Ireland.

Raths were the enclosed farmsteads of early medieval Ireland, typically dating from somewhere between the fifth and twelfth centuries, their circular banks and ditches defining both a working agricultural unit and a statement of modest social standing. At Carrowndangan, the interior of the enclosure is still level and carries faint traces of cultivation ridges running on a north-east to south-west axis, the ghostly corrugations of former lazy-bed or ridge-and-furrow farming that post-dates the monument's original use. On the south-south-western side of the scarp there is a slumped section roughly three metres wide, interpreted as the possible site of the original entrance. A modern property fence cuts across the north-western edge, and a parallel field ditch runs alongside it on that same side, the ordinary infrastructure of contemporary land management overlapping with something considerably older. A band of wet, rush-grown ground lies close to the east and south-east of the site, which may have influenced the choice of location when the rath was first laid out, wet ground offering a natural obstacle on at least one flank.
