Ringfort (Rath), Churchfield, Co. Mayo

A ringfort sits in improved pasture at Churchfield in County Mayo, occupying a natural limestone rise with views stretching south across a wide valley of bog and flat grazing land.

What makes this one quietly unusual is the degree to which later stone-quarrying has carved into the monument itself, leaving large grassed-over pits that break the enclosure and complicate any reading of its original form.

The fort is oval in plan, measuring roughly 44 metres on its longer axis and just under 35 metres on its shorter one. A ringfort, sometimes called a rath, is a type of enclosed farmstead typical of early medieval Ireland, usually defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches surrounding a domestic interior. Here, an earth and stone inner bank stands up to 1.65 metres high on the outside at its northern arc, with stones protruding from the surface that may be the remnants of an original stone facing. Beyond the inner bank runs a flat-bottomed fosse, a defensive ditch roughly 3 metres wide, and beyond that a lower external bank that also shows traces of possible stone facing along its south-western and western stretches. The interior has been further disrupted by a sinuous field bank running roughly east to west across its centre, suggesting the enclosed area was later pressed into agricultural use. Three quarry pits, now softened under grass, have done considerable damage: one large irregular pit nearly 20 metres long cuts through the southern inner bank and extends into the interior, while another pit roughly 10 metres across truncates both the inner bank and the fosse at the north. Where the original entrance once stood is genuinely uncertain. Candidates include a slumped section of the inner bank at the north-east, a narrow break in both banks at the south-east, and a gap in the outer bank to the south-south-east, though the last sits beside one of the quarry pits that may itself have obscured or destroyed the corresponding section of the inner enclosure.
