It is, in fact, a rath, the more technical term for the earthen variety of ringfort, those enclosed farmsteads that were built and occupied across Ireland primarily during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Thousands survive across the island in varying states of preservation, but each one repays attention on its own terms.

This particular example measures approximately 38 metres north to south and 41 metres east to west, making it a fairly typical domestic-scale enclosure. Its defining features are modest but legible: a low inner bank standing around 0.3 metres high, a shallow intervening fosse, which is simply a ditch, dug to a depth of about 0.2 metres, and an outer bank of similar height to the inner one. The entrance, positioned to the north-east and 2.4 metres wide, retains a causeway crossing the fosse, the original threshold through which animals and people would have passed daily. The north-east orientation of the entrance is not unusual for Irish ringforts and may reflect practical concerns around light or prevailing winds. What is notable here is the condition of the western side, which shows signs of quarrying, suggesting the earthwork was at some point treated as a convenient source of material rather than a monument worth preserving whole. Another ringfort lies approximately 250 metres to the north, hinting that this part of the demesne was once a more densely settled early medieval landscape than its current pastoral quiet would suggest.
