Enclosures
In the townland of Pollaniska in County Mayo, an enclosure sits in the landscape, recorded and mapped but not yet fully described to the public.
That gap between acknowledgement and explanation is itself a quietly interesting condition for an ancient site to occupy. Enclosures of this kind, broadly speaking, are defined areas bounded by earthen banks, ditches, or stone walls, and they appear across Ireland in many forms and from many periods. Some enclosed settlement sites, some were used for ritual purposes, and some remain genuinely ambiguous. Without more detailed survey information available for this particular example, which of those categories it belongs to remains an open question.
