Beneath the ground at Cross, in County Mayo, there may be a passage that has gone largely unremarked for centuries.
A souterrain, to use the archaeological term, is an underground stone-lined tunnel or chamber, typically associated with early medieval ringforts and thought to have served as a place of refuge, storage, or concealment. The one at Cross sits within a ringfort, and what little is known of it comes down to a single reference and the faint possibility of traces on the eastern side.
