Structure, Rathfran, Co. Mayo

Out in the intertidal mudflats where the River Moy bends through its upper estuary in County Mayo, a grass-covered mound sits surrounded by salt marsh and a web of narrow water channels, effectively marooned as a small island some forty to seventy metres from the dry river bank.

It is oblong in shape, roughly eight to nine metres north to south and three and a half to four metres across, rising to a narrow flat top about a metre and a half wide. Stones visible around the base appear to have been deliberately placed, suggesting a wall or revetment, the kind of facing used to stabilise and retain an earthwork or embankment. A firm, stony apron of ground encircles the mound before giving way to the semi-flooded marsh beyond. What exactly this structure is, nobody knows for certain.

The mound's age is unrecorded, and its absence from the 1838 Ordnance Survey six-inch map is telling. By the time the 1922 edition was produced, it appears as a small island, which suggests either that it had changed significantly in the intervening decades or that the earlier surveyors simply did not consider it worth marking. Its position is hard to overlook in another respect: it sits directly opposite Rathfran Abbey, a medieval Dominican friary whose remains stand on the north bank of the river just a hundred metres away. That proximity has led to the reasonable speculation that the structure may have been in use during the monastery's active period, possibly functioning as a mooring point for boats or as a platform for fishing in the estuary. The River Moy has long been associated with salmon fishing, and a religious community would have had practical reasons to maintain such an outpost on the water's edge. But these remain possibilities rather than conclusions, and the structure carries no inscription, no documentary record, and no firm date.
