Mound, Scregg, Co. Mayo

At the junction of three old field walls, just below the crest of a hill in Scregg, County Mayo, sits a low circular mound that is easy to walk past without a second thought.

It reads, at first glance, as simply part of the landscape, a slight rise in the pasture softened by sod, brambles, and a few hawthorn bushes. But the geometry gives it away: roughly circular, flat-topped, about ten metres across, and marginally higher on its south-western side than its north-eastern, suggesting something deliberately shaped rather than naturally accumulated.

The mound is composed of earth and stone, and carries on its north-eastern surface a small heap of loose field clearance stone, the kind of casual deposit farmers leave when tidying a field. Whether that material was placed on a feature already ancient, or whether the mound itself began as agricultural spoil and took on a more formal character over time, is not recorded. What is clear is that it occupies a considered position, close to a break of slope to the south-west, with open views across the surrounding land. Mounds of this general type in Ireland range from prehistoric burial mounds to medieval earthworks, and their flat tops sometimes indicate later reuse or modification, though no excavation or detailed survey of this particular feature has been published. The meeting of three field boundaries at the same point adds a further layer of ambiguity; in rural Ireland, unusual earthworks were often incorporated into field systems rather than cleared, sometimes out of practicality, sometimes out of a more cautious respect for whatever the ground might hold.
