Enclosure, Bishopsquarter, Co. Clare

On the western end of a low hillock near the shores of Co. Clare, a circular enclosure sits partially erased from the landscape, its southern arc still readable as a low scarp in the grass while the northern half has been quietly swallowed by a later field wall.

What makes this site quietly puzzling is that it was once fully visible: the 1842 edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map recorded it as a complete circle, hachured clearly enough to suggest the surveyors had no difficulty tracing it. Sometime between that mapping and the present, a field wall was built east to west directly across the enclosure, truncating it and effectively erasing any surface trace north of that boundary.

Enclosures of this kind, roughly circular earthworks typically formed by a bank and ditch, are among the most common early medieval monument types in Ireland, often associated with settlement or farming activity, and sometimes with ecclesiastical use. This one measures about 26 metres in internal diameter east to west, placing it at the smaller end of the scale. The townland name, Bishopsquarter, hints at possible ecclesiastical connections, though the name alone is not enough to draw firm conclusions. About 180 metres to the north-north-west, closer still to the shoreline, a second and considerably smaller enclosure survives, measuring roughly 10 metres by 9.6 metres internally, sitting almost at the water's edge. Whether the two were ever related in function is not known, but their proximity, with the larger set back on the hillock and the smaller pressed against the foreshore, gives the pair an arrangement that feels deliberate rather than coincidental.
