Known locally as An Rath, the site is a circular earthwork enclosure of a type built throughout Ireland during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, typically serving as a defended farmstead for a family of some local standing.

What sets this example apart is the sheer scale and condition of its surviving earthworks. The inner bank, which rises to nearly four and a half metres on its exterior face at the south-west, is partly faced with stone on the inside, suggesting some care in its construction beyond simple piled earth. Outside it lies a flat-bottomed fosse, the defensive ditch that would have been a genuine obstacle, and beyond that an outer bank, lower and less continuous, surviving mainly along the western arc and from the north-west around to the north-east. Mature trees now grow along the outer edge of the inner bank, and a later field wall has been built along the line of the outer bank at the north-east, the kind of quiet reuse that shows how these monuments were absorbed into the working landscape over the centuries. Antiquarian T. J. Westropp noted the site in both 1901 and 1915, placing it among the earthworks of Clare that he considered worth recording in detail. An Rath is a protected national monument in State care, listed as number 648.
