Ringfort (Rath), Fahee, Co. Clare

In the townland of Fahee, a modern administrative boundary follows an ancient one, almost by accident.

A low circular bank of stone and earth, just twenty to thirty centimetres high and roughly two to two and a half metres wide, traces out a ringfort on a west-facing slope of rough grazing and exposed limestone pavement. A ringfort, or rath, is an enclosed farmstead of early medieval Ireland, typically defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, and used as a dwelling and livestock enclosure. This one measures approximately twenty-four metres north to south and twenty-three metres east to west internally, which is a fairly modest example of the type. What makes it quietly odd is that a later field wall has been built along the inner edge of the original enclosure line, and that wall now serves as the townland boundary between Fahee and Ballyconry to the west. The ancient circuit has, in effect, been pressed into administrative service, its purpose quietly changed without anyone bothering to move it.

The site was recorded on the Cassini edition of the Ordnance Survey six-inch map in 1916, and appeared in the Record of Monuments and Places in 1996, where it was catalogued under the rather flat designation of "Enclosure". That label reflects genuine uncertainty; a circular earthwork of this kind can be difficult to classify without excavation. The limestone pavement setting places it firmly in the Burren landscape of County Clare, where the thin soils and bare rock make surface archaeology both more visible and more vulnerable. The interior of the enclosure has gone unmown and untilled long enough to establish a small community of meadow plants, including meadowsweet, silverweed, birds-foot-trefoil, and St John's Wort, all of which tend to colonise ground that has been left undisturbed for some time.
