Fulacht fia, Gortlecka, Co. Clare

Along the western shore of Coolreash Lough in County Clare, on ground that Ordnance Survey mapmakers once flagged as liable to floods, four prehistoric monuments sit in a loose chain through trees and rough grazing.

The southernmost of these is a low, grass-covered mound of small stones, roughly fourteen metres along its longer axis and barely half a metre at its highest point. It is, on the face of it, an unremarkable lump in a wet field. What makes it stranger is what it is supposed to be, and what it may not quite be.

Fulachtaí fia, the plural of fulacht fia, are among the most common prehistoric monuments in Ireland, numbering in the tens of thousands. They are generally interpreted as Bronze Age cooking sites, where stones were heated in a fire and then dropped into a water-filled trough to bring it to the boil, leaving behind a characteristic horseshoe-shaped mound of fire-cracked, burnt stone. That last detail matters here. The stones in this mound do not appear to be burnt, which sets it apart from the typical profile of the monument type and leaves its function genuinely unclear. It was identified as a fulacht fia in the Record of Monuments and Places in 1996, drawing on a map annotation made by Tom Coffey in 1994, but the absence of heat-shattered material introduces a quiet uncertainty that the classification does not resolve.

What lifts this site beyond a single anomaly is its neighbours. Three further monuments of the same type lie to the north, spaced at roughly sixty-five to seventy metres apart, making the grouping unusually regular. Whether that spacing reflects deliberate planning, repeated use of a favoured stretch of lakeshore over generations, or something else entirely, the pattern is striking. Four monuments, equidistant, in a flood-prone corridor beside the same lough, the northernmost sitting about one hundred and ninety-five metres from this one.
