Cairn, Caherblonick, Co. Clare

On a north-facing slope in the rough pastureland of Caherblonick, a prehistoric cairn sits quietly beneath centuries of accumulated neglect and agricultural encroachment.

What makes it immediately curious is its shape: rather than the rounded mound profile most people associate with ancient burial monuments, this one has a flat top, lending it an almost architectural quality. It slopes downward toward the north and northwest, and two dry-stone field walls have been built directly across and off it at some point in the intervening centuries, suggesting that at some stage the farmers working this land either did not recognise it for what it was, or simply could not afford to work around it.
