Tullan Fort, Coad, Co. Clare

On the western end of an east-west ridge in County Clare, trees have grown up around the ruins of a cashel, a type of early medieval stone enclosure, until it has become easy to overlook entirely.

The structure is technically still named on the map, appearing as Tullan Fort on both the 1842 and 1920 editions of the Ordnance Survey six-inch series, but the label now attaches to something that requires a little patience to read. The land drops away sharply to the south and falls off again about fifty metres to the north, which gives the site a quiet command of its surroundings even in its current, diminished state.

The cashel is subcircular in plan, measuring roughly 34.8 metres across internally and 38.8 metres across externally on the northwest-southeast axis. Those dimensions suggest it was once a substantial enclosure, but much of it has not survived intact. A later field wall cuts across the southwest portion, removing that section of the original boundary altogether. Where the old stone wall does remain, it reaches a width of two metres at the southeast, and at the northwest it merges with the edge of a natural scarp, a low earthen drop of about a metre, where the wall broadens to 3.5 metres. Occasional facing-stones, the dressed outer surfaces of the original construction, are still visible around the perimeter, offering glimpses of how deliberately the thing was built. Towards the interior, just south of centre, a line of upright slabs runs for about six metres on a north-south axis. What these slabs originally supported or divided is unclear, but their presence suggests the interior was organised in some deliberate way, not simply an open yard.
