Field system, Caherfadda, Co. Clare

On the eastern edge of the Burren, on a hill called Roughan, the ground holds the outlines of an entire farming landscape that was already ancient long before anyone thought to write anything down.

What makes Caherfadda quietly remarkable is not a single monument but the sheer scale of what has survived: a field system stretching roughly two and a half kilometres north to south and one and a half kilometres east to west, its boundaries formed from sections of prehistoric mound wall, the kind of low earthen bank built up over generations of clearing stone and turning soil.

Survey and excavation work published by Jones and colleagues has pieced together what this landscape once contained. Several individual farms have been identified within the system, each marked by conjoined and overlapping enclosures with irregular, curvilinear outlines, the kind of boundaries that accumulate organically rather than being laid out to a plan. Scattered among them are cairns and megalithic tombs, the latter being stone-built burial monuments characteristic of the Neolithic and early Bronze Age periods. The picture that emerges is not of a single event or a single community but of a prehistoric landscape that was used, modified, and built upon across a considerable span of time. The Burren as a whole is well known for its limestone pavements and its early medieval stone forts, but this field system on Roughan Hill points to an organised agricultural presence that predates most of what visitors to the region are likely to think about.
