Enclosure, Liscullaun, Co. Clare

In the townland of Liscullaun, in County Clare, an enclosure sits in the landscape, recorded and mapped but not yet fully explained.

Enclosures of this kind are among the most common yet least understood monuments in the Irish countryside. The term covers a broad range of features, from the circular earthen banks of early medieval ringforts, which served as farmsteads and status markers, to later field boundaries or ecclesiastical enclosures that defined sacred or domestic space. Without more detailed information, the precise character of this one remains open, which is itself a reminder of how much of Clare's archaeological fabric has yet to be closely examined.
