Ringfort (Cashel), Nooan, Co. Clare

At Nooan in County Clare, there is a cashel sitting quietly in the landscape, distinguished from the more common earthen ringfort by the fact that its enclosing boundary is built from stone rather than raised earth and ditches.

Cashels of this kind are essentially dry-stone walled enclosures, typically circular, and were used throughout early medieval Ireland as defended farmsteads or the residences of local lords. Clare, with its abundance of exposed limestone, produced a great many of them, though not all have survived with equal clarity.

Beyond its classification and location, the specific history of this particular cashel at Nooan remains largely unrecorded in any publicly available form. No excavation reports, no detailed structural description, and no associated finds appear to have made it into the accessible record. It joins a long list of Irish monuments that are formally acknowledged to exist but whose individual stories, if they were ever documented at all, remain out of easy reach. That silence is itself a kind of fact. Thousands of these enclosures were constructed across Ireland between roughly the fifth and twelfth centuries, each one representing a household, a family, a small claim on productive land, and the majority of them have never been excavated or studied in any depth.
