Ringfort (Cashel), Drummina, Co. Clare

In the townland of Drummina in County Clare, there sits a cashel, a type of ringfort constructed from dry-stone walling rather than the earthen banks more commonly associated with these early medieval enclosures.

Cashels are found across Ireland but occur with particular frequency in the west, where stone was plentiful and cutting turf for ramparts was less practical. They served as enclosed farmsteads, the stone walls offering protection for a family, their livestock, and their stores during a period when such boundaries carried both practical and social weight.

Beyond its classification and location, the documentary record for this particular site is currently thin. What can be said is that ringforts of all kinds, whether earthen raths or stone cashels, were built predominantly during the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to twelfth centuries, and represent the most numerous class of field monument surviving in the Irish landscape. Several tens of thousands are known to exist, yet each one occupied a specific plot of ground for a reason, responding to local topography, land quality, and the social arrangements of whoever held that territory. Drummina sits in a county whose limestone geology has preserved a remarkable number of such structures, some well-documented, others, like this one, still awaiting fuller attention.
