Ringfort (Rath), Clonmoher, Co. Clare

In the townland of Clonmoher, in County Clare, there survives a ringfort, known in Irish as a rath, of the kind that once numbered in their tens of thousands across the Irish countryside.

These circular enclosures, typically defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, were the farmsteads of early medieval Ireland, built and occupied roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. They were not primarily defensive structures in any military sense, though the banks would have kept livestock in and wolves out. They were homes, the centres of family and agricultural life, and they persist in the landscape with a quiet stubbornness that centuries of farming have only partly eroded.

Clonmoher itself is a small townland in Clare, a county already dense with archaeological remains ranging from the limestone pavements of the Burren to the great promontory forts along its Atlantic coastline. Ringforts in this part of Ireland often sit on slight rises in the ground, their circular outlines still legible as crop marks or as raised rims of earth softened by time. The rath at Clonmoher belongs to this broader pattern of early settlement, a remnant of a period when the Irish landscape was divided into hundreds of small kingdoms and the ringfort was the basic unit of rural life. Beyond its location in Clonmoher and its classification as a rath, the specific details of this particular site remain sparse, and what survives on the ground tells its story more plainly than any document currently can.
