Ringfort (Cashel), Ballylannidy, Co. Clare

In the townland of Ballylannidy in County Clare, there sits a cashel, a type of ringfort defined by its construction in dry-stone rather than earthen banks.

Where the more familiar rath was built up from raised earthworks, a cashel was walled in stone, and in the limestone-rich landscape of Clare, stone was always the more logical building material. These structures date broadly to the early medieval period, roughly the fifth to the twelfth centuries, and served as enclosed farmsteads for local farming families, occasionally for those of higher social rank.

Clare is unusually dense with such monuments. The county's geology made stone enclosures a practical choice, and the Burren in particular preserves cashels in remarkable condition, though Ballylannidy lies in a quieter, less-visited part of the county. The townland name itself is a partial anglicisation of an Irish original, and townlands of this kind often preserve the oldest layers of local naming, sometimes referencing the very features, such as a fort or an enclosure, that still sit within their boundaries.

Beyond its classification and location, the specific history of this cashel, its dimensions, its condition, any finds associated with it, and the details of who may have occupied it, remain largely undocumented in publicly available sources at present. What can be said is that it exists, recorded and recognised, in a county where the early medieval landscape is still legible if you know what you are looking at.
