Ringforts
In the townland of Gorteen in County Clare, a cashel sits in the landscape as it has for well over a thousand years.
A cashel is a ringfort built from stone rather than earth and timber, the dry-stone walls forming a roughly circular enclosure that would once have protected a farmstead, its animals, and the family who worked the land around it. Thousands of these structures survive across Ireland, yet each one occupies a particular patch of ground with its own local logic, its own relationship to water, slope, and soil.
