Ringfort (Rath), Cloghauninchy, Co. Clare

In the low-lying ground of Cloghauninchy in County Clare, a grass-covered rise holds a quiet puzzle: a ringfort with no visible entrance.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, are the most common archaeological monument type in Ireland, typically the enclosed farmsteads of early medieval families, defined by an earthen bank and sometimes a surrounding ditch, or fosse. This one follows the broad template, but the absence of any discernible gap in its bank sets it slightly apart from the norm.

The site presents as a near-circular area roughly 25 metres across, its interior defined by an earthen bank between four and seven metres wide. The bank itself is modest in height, rising perhaps half a metre on the interior side and a little more on the exterior, suggesting time and agriculture have done their softening work. At the south-east, faint traces survive of an outer fosse, a shallow ditch that would once have reinforced the enclosure's boundary. More curious still is a low mound sitting just east of centre inside the enclosure, around five metres in diameter and rising to approximately 0.7 metres. Its purpose is not recorded, and it sits there unaccounted for, a detail that resists easy explanation. The site occupies a slight rise in the surrounding flat ground, which would have given its original inhabitants a modest but useful elevation over the landscape around them.
