That merging is what makes this particular rath worth pausing over. The enclosure has not been dramatically preserved or signposted into significance; it has been farmed around and slowly swallowed, its edges softened by scrub, its original purpose as a defended homestead now visible only if you know what you are looking at.

A rath, or ringfort, is the most common monument type in the Irish landscape, typically a circular area enclosed by one or more earthen banks, used as a farmstead during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. This example at Cloghauninchy sits on a gentle west-facing slope and measures approximately 26 metres across internally, east to west, and 25 metres north to south. Its defining bank is between three and four metres wide and rises only 35 centimetres to a metre above the interior ground level, modest dimensions by any standard. What complicates the picture is that this bank has been incorporated into a later field boundary running from south-south-west to north-west, making the two structures effectively inseparable on the ground. Notably, there is no visible fosse, the external ditch that typically accompanies such an earthen bank, which may indicate it was never dug, that it has silted and levelled over centuries, or simply that the surrounding topography made one unnecessary. The entrance, just two metres wide, faces east-south-east.
