Ringforts
Near the tip of the Killard peninsula in County Clare, where the Shannon Estuary opens towards the Atlantic, a rath sits quietly in the landscape.
A rath, or ringfort, is a circular enclosure typically defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, built during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and used most often as a defended farmstead for a single family or small community. Ireland has tens of thousands of them, yet each one occupied a specific patch of ground for a reason, chosen by someone who understood the local terrain, the sight lines, the drainage. Killard is no exception, and the presence of one here, on a stretch of coastline more often associated with its rare sand dunes and botanical interest, gives the place a particular kind of quiet density.
