Enclosures
In the townland of Cloghlea in County Clare, there is a scheduled archaeological enclosure that has yet to yield much of its story to the public record.
Enclosures of this kind are among the most common yet most enigmatic features of the Irish landscape: roughly circular or oval boundaries formed from earthen banks, ditches, or stone walls, they served any number of purposes across the centuries, from livestock management to settlement to ritual use. Without more specific documentation, Cloghlea's example sits quietly in that large category of monuments that are known to exist, are protected in law, and are otherwise waiting to be properly understood.
