Enclosures
In the townland of Kilballyowen in County Clare, an enclosure sits in the landscape, recorded and mapped but largely unwritten about.
Enclosures of this kind are among the most common yet least understood archaeological features in Ireland, ranging from early medieval ringforts, which served as defended farmsteads for a single family or kin group, to later stock enclosures whose origins are harder to pin down. The fact that this one has a formal monument record at all suggests it retains enough physical presence to have caught an archaeologist's eye, even if the paperwork has not yet caught up with it.
