Ringforts
On the Atlantic-facing edge of County Clare, not far from the seaside town of Kilkee, there survives a ringfort, or rath, of the kind that once formed the basic unit of rural life across early medieval Ireland.
Thousands of these circular enclosures were built between roughly the fifth and twelfth centuries, each one typically a farmstead enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches. They are so numerous in the Irish landscape, perhaps forty thousand surviving in various states, that they have become almost invisible through familiarity. And yet each one marks a family, a holding, a decision about where to live and how to defend it.
