Sheepfold, Tullycommon, Co. Clare

An oval drystone enclosure on a north-west-facing slope in County Clare might seem like an unremarkable agricultural footnote, but this particular sheepfold at Tullycommon has a quiet geometry worth pausing over.
Measuring roughly 24 metres north to south and 17 metres east to west, it sits within about 50 metres of a severe cliff or steep drop, which would have made the management of livestock here a careful business. Drystone construction, in which flat or rounded stones are stacked without mortar and rely entirely on weight and balance for their integrity, was the standard method for field enclosures across the west of Ireland, where glacially deposited stone was abundant and lime mortar was not always easily had.
