Ringfort (Cashel), Ballyhomulta, Co. Clare

What makes this particular cashel in Ballyhomulta quietly remarkable is not what survives of it, but what it sits on top of.

A cashel is a ringfort built from stone rather than earth, typically dating to the early medieval period, and this one in County Clare has been constructed directly over the southern quadrant of an older cashel beneath it. One circular enclosure swallowing part of another, each representing a separate episode of occupation in the same patch of rough ground.

The site itself is subcircular, measuring roughly 23 metres on its north-east to south-west axis and 20 metres across from north-west to south-east. Its defining wall has long since collapsed and now reads as a grass-covered bank rather than upstanding stonework. At its centre sits a hut site, the kind of small domestic structure that would once have sheltered people or animals within the protected interior of the enclosure. This layering of activity extends outward too. Within about 70 to 75 metres lie an enclosure, a road or trackway, and a house of indeterminate date, all sitting within a larger multiperiod field system that speaks to generations of land use in this part of Clare. What is striking is how this concentration of features was overlooked entirely by both the Sites and Monuments Record of 1992 and the Record of Monuments and Places compiled in 1996, meaning it went unregistered in the two major national surveys of its era.

The surrounding landscape of low undulating rough pasture gives little away from a distance. What appears to be unremarkable grazing land carries, just beneath the surface of its grass and collapsed stone, the compressed remains of multiple phases of settlement laid one upon the other over centuries.
