Hut site, Mooghaun, Co. Clare

Before the great ramparts of Mooghaun hillfort were ever raised, somebody was already living there.

Tucked into what would eventually become the south-eastern quadrant of one of Ireland's largest Bronze Age hillforts, a cluster of subtle marks in the ground points to a structure that predates the enclosure built around it. No walls survive, no roof line, no hearth. What remains are a post-pit roughly 0.8 metres across and 0.4 metres deep, along with two small clusters of stake-holes sitting about two metres to its south-west and south-east. Together, these features trace the ghost of a dwelling, the kind of evidence that requires careful excavation and considerable patience to read.

The site was excavated in 1995 as part of the North Munster Project, a research initiative run by the Discovery Programme, an organisation established to carry out large-scale archaeological investigations across Ireland. The work, conducted under licence number 92E0093, placed this modest collection of pits and holes within a broader sequence of activity at Mooghaun. According to Eoin Grogan's 2005 study of the hillfort, the hut is thought to represent the first phase of occupation in this part of the site, meaning people were settled here before anyone decided to enclose the hilltop with the massive stone and earthen ramparts that now define it. The sequence matters: the rampart came later, and was built over or around whatever domestic life had already taken root on the hillside.
