Ring-ditch, Claureen, Co. Clare

In the townland of Claureen, in County Clare, a circular earthwork sits quietly in the landscape, its purpose still prompting debate among archaeologists.

Ring-ditches are among the more enigmatic features recorded across the Irish countryside: shallow, roughly circular ditches, usually visible today only as crop marks or soil discolourations from the air, they are most commonly interpreted as the ploughed-out remains of Bronze Age burial mounds, where the surrounding ditch once defined a sacred or funerary enclosure. The mound itself may have long since vanished, levelled by centuries of agriculture, but the ditch, cut into the subsoil, leaves a trace that persists long after everything above ground has gone.

Claureen is a small rural townland in Clare, and the presence of a ring-ditch there places it within a wider pattern of prehistoric activity that dots the county, from the limestone uplands of the Burren to the more fertile lowland areas further east. Without further excavation or detailed survey data, it is difficult to say more about this particular example, including its precise dimensions, its date, or whether any burial deposits survive beneath the surface. What can be said is that features of this kind typically belong to the second or third millennium BC, a period when the deposition of the dead within specially constructed earthwork enclosures was common across Ireland and Britain.
