Enclosure, Rannagh, Co. Clare

On the Carran plateau in County Clare, just west of Carran village, a roughly circular stone enclosure sits quietly among a cluster of prehistoric remains that together suggest this limestone upland was once far busier than it appears today.

The enclosure measures around 70 metres in diameter, enough to contain a respectable amount of activity, and at its centre lies a circular hut site, the kind of structure that would have provided shelter for people living and working within the enclosure's walls during prehistory.

This site is one of five prehistoric enclosures identified on the Carran plateau, and it does not stand in isolation. A larger enclosure adjoins it to the east, and another substantial enclosure lies roughly 65 metres to the south-southwest, creating a complex of related monuments that hints at organised, repeated use of the plateau over an extended period. The enclosure's defining walls closely resemble those of another of the five plateau enclosures situated about 1.8 kilometres to the south-east, and that comparable site has been dated to the Late Bronze Age, a period broadly spanning from around 1200 to 600 BC. The similarity in construction suggests the Rannagh enclosure may belong to the same broad horizon of activity, though a precise date for it has not been established independently. Research by Jones and colleagues, along with work by Hennigar and Gibson, has helped piece together this picture of the plateau as a landscape of interconnected prehistoric settlement rather than a scattering of unrelated features.
