Enclosure, Gleninagh, Co. Clare

On the lower western slopes of Cappanawalla, in the karst landscape of the Burren in County Clare, a circular stone-walled enclosure sits quietly within a curvilinear field system that predates any map most visitors would think to consult.

The enclosure measures roughly 35 metres in diameter, and it is not alone. Two comparable enclosures lie nearby, one approximately 35 metres to the north and another around 85 metres to the northwest, forming a loose cluster on the limestone terrain.

Karst is a landscape shaped by the gradual dissolution of soluble rock, producing the Burren's characteristic pavements, grikes, and exposed grey slabs. It is a terrain that preserves ancient features with unusual fidelity, and this enclosure is part of a wider curvilinear field system, a type of organised agricultural or pastoral landscape whose boundaries follow flowing, irregular lines rather than the straight edges of later planned farming. The enclosures themselves are the kind of stone-walled circular structures found across early medieval and prehistoric Ireland, though assigning a precise date without excavation is not straightforward. What is notable here is the grouping: three enclosures within close range of one another, embedded in a field system that still reads as a coherent arrangement on the ground. The site came to wider attention relatively recently, identified by Ros Ó Maolduin through satellite imagery from Digital Globe between 2011 and 2013, and subsequently reported to the National Monuments Service. It is a reminder that even in a landscape as thoroughly studied as the Burren, the ground still holds things that only a careful eye, or an overhead one, can find.
