Enclosure, Sheshymore, Co. Clare

At Sheshymore in County Clare, a low drystone wall traces out a rough rectangle across the landscape, less than half a metre wide and barely reaching a metre in height.

It is not especially imposing, but what surrounds it and lies within it tells a more layered story. This enclosure sits inside a much larger field system, and it comes with an internal subdivision, a concealed underground passage, and a cluster of prehistoric monuments within a few dozen metres in every direction.

The enclosure measures roughly 60 metres north to south and 70 metres east to west, its boundary formed by a single course of dry-laid stone. Drystone construction, which uses no mortar and relies entirely on the careful fitting of stones, is common across the west of Ireland, and here it defines not only the outer boundary but also an internal rectangular subdivision in the north-east quadrant, approximately 31 metres by 21 metres, which separates that corner off from the rest of the interior. Beneath the south-east quadrant lies a souterrain, an artificial underground passage or chamber typically associated with early medieval settlement and used variously for storage, refuge, or concealment. Approximately 25 metres to the west, a cairn, a mound of stones covering burial cists, or stone-lined graves, preserves traces of much earlier activity. A cashel, a circular stone-walled enclosure of the kind used as a farmstead or defended residence in early medieval Ireland, lies just 22 metres to the south-west. The reference for this cluster of features is a 2019 survey by Bowmer, which places the enclosure within a dense and clearly well-used stretch of ancient ground.
