Ringforts
At Ballyconnoe in County Clare, a cashel sits quietly in the landscape, distinguished from the more common earthen ringfort by the fact that its enclosing wall is built from stone rather than thrown-up soil and timber.
Cashels of this kind are particularly associated with the west of Ireland, where good building stone is plentiful and the thin soils made earthwork construction less practical. They served the same basic purpose as their earthen counterparts, functioning as enclosed farmsteads during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, protecting a household, its livestock, and its stores within a roughly circular perimeter.
